History of the Guild

In September 1978 upon completion of the newly built Calvert Memorial Hospital, Calvert County Maryland, a group of three women organized and obtained local artworks to decorate and hang in the newly built facility. From this activity a nucleus of county artists was formed. Then, on the suggestion of Mary D. Harrison (County Commissioner), these three women, (Nancy Callahan, Carolyn Deputy Weikert Crone-Aamot, and Gerry Spore Wood) combined their ideas, talents, and organization, and the Guild was born. It required enthusiasm, dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. The Calvert Artists’ Guild was Incorporated in 1981.

We grew from a few artists to over 110 in our most active years. Since its inception in 1978 the Calvert Artists’ Guild has always tried to promote art in Calvert County and to develop interest and appreciation in all mediums of art. All are welcomed to membership, artists and non-artists alike. The Guild holds workshops, fieldtrips, programs and demonstrations, an annual picnic, Solomons Gazebo/Boardwalk show, as well as gallery and other shows & receptions.

2003 marked the 25th Anniversary of the Calvert Artists’ Guild, Inc. since its founding in September 1978. The Guild filled a needed void to unite artists and offer opportunities for learning and sharing. The Guild has continued its progress and successes over the years with many wonderful officers and members. We continue to find new gallery space, to hold informative programs and workshops, to help in the community through Hospice Tree sponsorship, the Children’s Art Show at Jefferson Patterson Park, and scholarship, and special member opportunities to show and sell artworks. One goal was to create a web site, which is now a reality……

The Calvert Artists’ Guild, Inc. is an organization to bring artists together to learn, to appreciate, and to promote art.
